Saudi’s Prince Alwaleed donates $1m to Sierra Leone

The president of Sierra Leone has confirmed receipt of a $1m donation from Saudi Arabia’s Prince Alwaleed bin Talal, to be used to fund improved maternal and child health and youth employment in the west African country.

The donation was made through the prince’s Alwaleed Foundation and was originally confirmed in June this year.

Dr Sylvia Blyden, the special executive assistant to the president of Sierra Leone, Ernest Bai Koroma, was tasked with managing the conditions under which the money was donated and said the money will be utilised in specific sector projects that are “tangible and with a visible and quickly felt impact,” the Awareness Times news agency reported.

The prince made the donation after a one-day visit to the country this summer.

ierra Leone is slowly being reestablished after the civil war that rampaged through the country from 1991 to 2002 and resulted in tens of thousands of deaths and the displacement of more than two million people.

It is an extremely poor nation but a number of offshore oil discoveries were announced in 2009 and 2010 and this helped growth skyrocket to more than 20 percent in 2012.
